Sooooo….the lines in the sand have been drawn. It’s Droid vs iPhone on the software AND hardware front.
What am I talking about? I’m talking about Google’s purchase of Motorola Mobile this morning.
Two things are likely to come out of this, the death stroke of both RIM and Windows Phone 7, well maybe not phone 7, but Blackberry is certainly toast. Droid has been gobbling up phone market share like a politician gobbles up tax money, and that’s just on the software side.
On the hardware side, Motorola has always been a brand name you could trust. A business that has been in the electronics arena for a long time, especially in the wireless arena (ya know pre-celluar communication like CB and 2 way radio).
My fear though, is that Google is a software company and aside from their data centers, they have no hardware experience. I currently have a Motorola DroidX and it is easily the best smart phone I’ve had. I think that comes from a partnership between 2 companies that are good at what they do. Granted, Google has a way of driving innovation so I’m excited to see where this may go but at the same time, I’m afraid that Google might butcher an excellent phone maker.
Now this begs the question, will Android be available on other phone platforms like it is currently, or will Google make Droid a proprietary phone like the iPhone? Do you think anyone an Apple is concerned? I also wonder how this is going to work with Oracles lawsuit. Of course, while I’m wondering semi allowed, I’m starting to get concerned that Google is becoming the new Microsoft…power hungry and wants to rule the world.
