Droid or Bust

For the past couple of years I have had a BlackBerry Storm. It was my first real smartphone. It did everything I wanted, maybe not very well but it did it. For me a phone is a combination phone, calendar, mp3, weather station, and contact list. I also use the phone to talk on instant messenger and send texts. I rarely used the browser…mainly because the native browser sucked and the screen was too small. For what I did, it worked great..but then I have alot of friends that have Droids and iPhones, so I had a little phone envy. The had bigger screens, more apps (more free apps that is), held more stuff (larger flash drives) than my Strom did.

Over the holidays the wife lost her phone (we had matching phones, cute huh) on the snow cover road to our cabin in northern WI. Now you have to understand how my house works….I like cool new toys and my wife has the checkbook, a balance made in heaven (most of the time). So there are occasions when I have to let my wife decide how solve a problem on her own, this was one of those times. I was getting close to a contract renewal and I had been checking out new phones….of course I let the wheels spin in her head.

After a long drive home (it was a long drive up there too) the wife decided she’d rather keep the phone she had and I could get a new phone. She prefers to let me test drive. So I went out and got myself a DroidX by Motorola.First impressions were:

  • The touch screen was too damn sensitive
  • The phone wasn’t as inituitave as I thought
  • You can customize the phone to a fault
  • Google was getting more info on me
  • The touch screen was too damn sensitive

So with all of that going on…..and a week later…I have to admit, I’m a Droid fanboi. I love the screen size, picture quality is great, sound quality is good (It’s a phone…not a Rockford Fosgate Stereo), and after a bit of time you get used to the sensitive touchscreen. My favorite feature? You can link profiles. Because the phone downloads all of your contact info from instant messenger, outlook, gmail contacts, facebook, twitter, etc….the phone’s contact list allows to link the contact info together.

Why is that feature so cool? Well instead of searching through 300 contacts full of duplicate entries….I can link the facebook, twitter, phone numbers, emails, instant messenger info of on contact together. So instead of 5 seperate locations or 5 different sets of contact info per person, I can now link it all together to make one. That alone is the best feature of the phone.

I wonder what I’ll find when I have time to learn to write an app for droid….
