Interesting Trend in Politics

We all know the media puts a spin, or a slant, on the news they report. I guess that makes sense seeing as we are all human and we can’t generally tell a story from a detached standpoint. Good, bad, or indifferent, that’s just the nature of the beast. What does a responsible person do? Well I would assume they would research and seek out the truth to the story. I know I personally only really glance over the major news networks, and if I find something of interest, I do some fact checking. In other words, I’m skeptical of the media in general.

What does this have to do with the world of IT? Well, I noticed a dichotomy in the world of politics this last week. Politicians have recently jumped on the social network bandwagon. I think that’s great. It’s about time they get in tune with the people they represent, that is after all their job. What I find interesting, is the Obama administration going through great pains to communicate their message via social media and then Obama goes out and condemns information overload the average person is subjected to.

So what’s Obama angling at? Don’t listen to anyone else except the official message? The Obama message? Yes this period of human history is going down as one of the most changing events in the history of man. The Information Age is going to overshadow the Renaissance, the Industrial Revolution, and probably every other event since man discovered fire. The only thing that is going to be greater than the Information Age is the human colonization of space. So with all of this information at our fingertips, almost 24/7, it’s easier for the average person to fact check and research their own questions. So why is it a shock that people are doing just that when it comes to politics?

I would argue that these people are tired of the biased news reporting from the major media sources. I think Obama would prefer to put his own spin on his news. Of course, Obama isn’t the only one upset about this. The major media news outlets are becoming less influential in the everyday lives of regular people. Want proof? Take the Tea Party movement. There’s a message of less taxes, less government, and less government, but the major media outlets try to label these people as quacks. Really? I just see fed up people tired of the status quo and communicate their message over the net. Damn that social media.

I guess the only thing left for a person to do is watch and see what happens. We’ll see if the net and social media can change/save the world.
