Where are the Jobs?

I’ve been quite of late. Part of it has been I haven’t had much to say, part of it has been I’ve been busy. Having a web design business, and hopefully one day soon offering web development, I’ve been busy with side gigs. I’ve spent the last month or so re-working a site we’ve done for the last 6 or 7 years. It’s been interesting changing the code from old HTML with tables to a CSS layout. Between that and work, I’ve been trying to watch the newspaper and the job boards for entry level development gigs. I haven’t seen much.

Last week, Congress passed Obamacare. Whoopie, like we weren’t already over taxed. It got me thinking. I watched Obama’s State of the Union address where he swore his number 1 priority was going to be jobs. I drank a few beers that night, but I am almost 100% certain he said “#1 Priority”. I started asking, where’s the jobs? Yep, they passed the job bill….but I don’t see any new jobs. Do you?

What I have seen in the paper and on the boards are a few jobs that might work. The trouble is, they either want a specific skill set or 5 years of development in a language. Follow that up with, there’s so many people out of work, getting your resume noticed is difficult. It leaves a person wondering ya know? Like what’s a guy suppose to do?

I’m not going to whine about how bad it sucks to look for work, I do after all have a job. Not the best, but it could be worse I suppose. Lately I’ve gotten a chance to write some code for work, so that’s at least a step in the right direction. Right now I’m working on a C# program to format a spreadsheet into a fixed width report for a State report. It’s coming along easy enough. On the side, I just finished reworking a site like I said, so now I’m going to work on writing better Javascript and form for the site.

So hopefully shortly, I’ll be posting code snippets. I still need to get the code thing for Joomla working right. In the mean time I guess, I’ll be counting down the days to the fall semester.
